The title of this image is motivated by the atmosphere this picture portrays. It could be interpreted as being shot in a sweat shop in Indonesia, but actually it shows an African child standing in the middle of an indoor playground. Also notice the U.S.Army badge sown on the kids shirt.

This little girl caught my attention, during the kids' lunch break. An unforgettable smile!

This Xhosa man walked up to me as I was taking the picture of the little girl in the red dress. Tapped me on the shoulder, unwrapped his radio, smiled and said "Now you can take MY photo" and took off. Still have not been able to track him down...

Children roam the streets of Grahamstown. Often they are orphans or their parents work all day and cannot afford for their children to go to school.
The red colour is the original colour of their clothing.

Whilst other children are at school these two boys are left at home whilst their mother goes to town to work. This house is very old, noticeable as the mud from the walls has eroded due to rain and wind. Copyright 2005 © Gregor Röhrig
Noveli Melwa (72) stands in her house, a one roomed mud-hut, anxious and weak. The only aid she gets is from her neighbours. (Mail&Guardian 15.10.2004) Copyright 2005 © Gregor Röhrig
Noveli Melwa (72) has no pension, lives in the Zolani township area of Grahamstown.
“I live off picking up tin cans and selling them to buy some paraffin to cook food. I was nearly raped once while collecting cans by a group of young men. It is not safe where I live. People break into the house, sometimes when I am sleeping and take whatever they want. I look after my three grandchildren. It is not easy and I rely on kind neighbours who help me out with food to feed myself and my family.” (Mail&Guardian 15.10.2004)

Asemahle Kulati is one of many children spending time at the Multi-Purpose Comunity Centre in Grahamstown. Her total aloofness to the camera inspired me to take this picture during her intense thoughtful moment. Copyright 2005 © Gregor Röhrig
